There are many different types of gardens. Some gardens are made to be a source of food, like a vegetable garden. Other gardens are made for beauty, using flowers and other plants. Some gardens are famous and huge, while others are tiny patches of vegetables or flowers. Whatever the size of the garden, gardening is actually the most popular outdoor hobby in the United States. Experienced garden lovers take it very seriously, and even have competitions. For a beginner, starting a garden can seem like a daunting task, but it can be made easier by following some steps.
•One should not try to begin with a large garden that will need constant care. Like any new hobby, starting small is a good way of getting used to the process of gardening. When choosing a spot for a garden, one should find a small and sunny spot in their yard. This will allow plants and flowers to grow better. Planning a garden plot will help one keep from becoming overwhelmed. This is another reason why starting with a small space is a good idea. Designing small gardens is easier than designing large gardens, at least for a beginner. The soil in the area that one chooses for their garden should feel rich and soft. If one has no soil like that in their yard, they should water the ground they are using a day prior to planting in the garden.
•Once the soil is softer in the garden plot, an individual should water the soil again immediately before planting anything. Dry soil is not good for plant roots. A garden will not grow properly if any roots are surrounded by dry soil. The soil must be damp, so that the roots can suck up the water in it. While some people may choose to use flower seeds in their garden, it is a better idea for a beginner to use small plants bought from a nursery. Gardens that are grown from seeds are harder to control for a beginning gardener. While at the nursery buying the small plants, one should first ask what types of vegetables, flowers or greenery will do well in the type of climate they are in.
•Using plants that grow easily in a garden is a good idea for a beginner. Any plants that are hard to take care of and require a lot of maintenance should wait until the individual has more experience. When working in the garden, one should dig small holes that will fit the plant roots. Making sure that the bottom of the hole is moist is important. One should then carefully put the plant roots into the ground. When the root is fully in and all that can be seen is the actual plant, one should loosely pack soil around it. A beginning gardener should design the garden so that each plant has room to grow. Spacing the plants out is important. The next step is to water the plants after they have been fully inserted and planted in the ground. The water helps the soil around the plant settle in so that the plant can flourish from it.
A garden for a beginner should be kept simple. It is easy to become frustrated if the plants in the garden do not grow properly. Maintaining a small garden is the first step in becoming an experienced gardener. Once an individual has learned how to take care of a small garden, they can begin expanding it and adding more exotic plants to the mix.
